Astros’ Trivia: See where you were right…and wrong

The Astros go to spring training with such an overall young and inexperienced team – you would think it would be difficult to come up with a few challenging trivia questions.

Well, you would be wrong…..

“Current” below refers to Astros in camp – 40 man roster plus non-roster-invitees.

#1 – Two current Astros are tied for having the most career home runs as Astros.  Who are they?

A: Chris Carter and ….surprise, surprise….Brett Wallace have both jacked 29 dingers as an Astro.

#2 – Who has appeared in more major league games – Chad Qualls or the following 11 pitchers  cumulatively – Scott Feldman, Jerome Williams, Dallas Keuchel, Lucas Harrell, Brad Peacock, Josh Fields, Brett Oberholtzer, Chia-Jen Lo, Kevin Chapman,  Jarred Cosart and Josh Zeid(Is Dan P being obvious or is this a sucker’s bet?)

A: Qualls has appeared in 663 games and those other 11 have appeared in 661.

#3 – Which current Astro has the most career RBI’s as an Astro?

A:  J.D. Martinez has 126 RBIs as an Astro. Both Chris Carter and Dexter Fowler have more career RBIs in the majors.

#4 – After Qualls with 51 saves – who has the next most career saves of current Astros? Pete Moylan, Matt Albers, Jesse Crain, Josh Fields or Jerome Williams?

A: Josh Fields had 5 in his rookie season, nudging out Moylan and Crain, who have 4 apiece, and Albers and Williams, who have none.

#5 – Who has more career steals – Jose Altuve or Dexter Fowler?

A: Mr. Fowler edges out young Altuve with 83 vs. 75 career steals.

#6 – Scott Feldman has the most career wins for any current pitcher (51). Which two pitchers are tied for the second most career wins (no matter what team)?

A: Relievers Jesse Crain and Chad Qualls both have 45 career wins in the majors.

#7 – Which current pitcher has the most career wins as an Astro?

A. He keeps popping up – but Chad Qualls in his first tour with the Astros picked up 23 wins. Second best as an Astro is Lucas Harrell with 18 wins.

#8 – Between the 40 man roster and the non-roster invitees, the Astros brought 64 players to training camp this season. How many of them are 30 years old or older?

A.  9 players are thirty-somethings – Albers, Crain, Feldman, Qualls, Williams, Raul Valdes, Moylan, Carlos Corporan and Cesar Izturis.

#9 – On the Astros 40 man roster – how many of the every day players have had birthday number 30?

A.  Only one – Carlos Corporan who turned 30 last month. (Unless you think he comes from the Miguel Tejada / Tony Eusebio school of counting birthdays).

#10 – The Astros 40 man roster includes 6 first round (or supplemental first  round) picks – most of them made by other teams. How many can you name?

A. Jerome Williams, Alex White, Asher Wojciechowski, Josh Fields, Matt Dominguez and the only Houston draftee, Jason Castro – who was also drafted highest as the 10th pick overall.

Hope you enjoyed this little quiz – it emphasizes just how inexperienced the Astros are and how this team is practically starting from scratch.
