Astros 2024: Best luck for a new year

I always find it interesting what superstitions there are about bringing good luck for the New Year. This was an intriguing article about superstitions around the world.

17 Best New Year’s Superstitions from Around the World – PureWow

Reading onions and carrying an empty suitcase are a couple of the odder ones on the list.

But for the Houston Astros however they obtain good luck for the next season, here are some things this writer would like to see for his favorite players.

  • For Yordan Alvarez and especially Jose Altuve a much healthier 2024 full of fun and opportunity.
  • For Framber Valdez, some Zen peacefulness when anxiety squeezes the bejeebers out of you.
  • For Cristian Javier, a little bit more of 2022, a little less of 2023.
  • For Yainer Diaz continued hitting and fielding success as you become the Man behind the plate.
  • For Joe Espada, a great time with your first shot as a big-league manager.
  • For Rafael Montero a big bounce-back season.
  • For Justin Verlander, another big step on your way to Cooperstown.
  • Foy Kyle Tucker, perhaps an extension, but if not, a season that is more like regular season 2023 than playoff 2023.
  • For Hunter Brown and J.P. France, a return to the first half of 2023 and a Men in Black brain zap to the second half.
  • For Alex Bregman, a jump back to the future with a repeat of 2018 or 2019.
  • For Ryan Pressly, perhaps a step back to 2021 and 2022, and for Bryan Abreu continued excellence with a few less hit batters.
  • For Jose Abreu, a return to the 9 seasons of excellence before you came here.
  • For Jose Urquidy, a defined role, either starting or relieving, and some solid pitching to go with it.
  • For Chas McCormick, playing time to match your value, and to Jake Meyers, some value to match your playing time.
  • For Lance McCullers Jr. and Luis Garcia, a healthy return sometime in 2024 and big-time assistance to the team down the stretch.
  • For Jeremy Pena, a return of your missing power.
  • For Kendall Graveman, solid performance without so many darned base runners.
  • For Mauricio Dubon, continued excellence as the team’s Swiss Army Knife
  • For unnamed prospects, new bullpen additions and part timers – a big step up into the spotlight and some performances to match.
  • For Dana Brown, some financial flexibility when you need it from Jim Crane.

What would you wish and for whom?

  1. For Yordan, I wish for him to lead the Astros in HRs and RBI’s and be the All-Star DH.
For Diaz, I wish for him to establish himself as a top catcher, and a middle of the order bat.
For Abreu, I wish him to have a normal spring training where he works himself up gradually to be ready for opening day as The Guy at 1B.
For Altuve, I wish him to be as good as he was last season after he made it back. I wish for him a new Astros contract for 2025 and beyond.
For Pena, I wish him to finish his development as a great SS.
For Bregman, I wish him good health and a new Astros contract.
    Oops, breakfast! More later.

  2. I want good health, and from there, I’ll take my chances.
I want Zach Dezenzo to convince us he’ll be ready to play third everyday in 2025.
I want Joey Loperfido to have such a good start in Sugar Land that he’ll force his way cross town before the All Star break.
I want Forrest to shock me and take ownership of a pen role.
I want Chas to keep doing what he did in 2023.
I want Yainer to hit lefties. Wouldn’t that be something!

I’ve got other stuff, but just finally ran into a dose of Covid on Christmas Day. It sure does take my energy! I’ll be back!

  3. I wish for Chas to produce like he did in 2023, but in 150 games.
I wish for Jake to be the center fielder on the 2024 World Series Champion Astros.
I wish for Kyle Tucker to make the All-Star team in 2024 and be a GG finalist.
These wishes take care of the starting position players.

  4. I’d like Jeremy Pena to post a .350 plus OBP. That’s all. We already know he can play D. If he gets on base more, he’ll hit more.
I’d love to see an .800 OPS from Abreu.
I’m wishing to see more of what I expected from Hunter Brown. I really think he has it.

  5. For the 2024 Astros, I wish for:

A winning home record to go along with a winning road record
A winning record in one-run games
A winning record in extra-inning games

Some may say that we were unlucky in those areas last season, but I say good players and good managers need to make their own good luck.

  6. I wish for Justin Verlander to have a healthy year. If so, I think everything else will fall into place.
I wish for Valdez, Javier and Urquidy to be happy with their new manager. If so, I think everything else will fall into place.
I wish for JP France and Hunter Brown to come back strong.
I wish for Graveman and Montero to find a comfortable and steady place in the Astros bullpen and to have a great year there.
I wish for two relievers to come out of the fog and surprise us this year.
I wish for Abreu to be able to move into a tandem with Pressly, so that we have two closers to give some relief to each other.
I wish for Arrighetti, Kouba and Gordon to have good years starting for Sugarland.
I wish Jairo Solis could become what I hoped he would become many years ago. That is, a force with that fastball.
I hope a LH hitting outfielder(or two) jumps out of the pack and is ready to be a factor in 2025 for the Astros.

  7. Having moved to Houston this year, I’m looking forward to spending a full year in H-town, getting to a few ball games, and meeting a few of you for a beer sometime …
