ChipalattAwards: June is busting out all over

If this was the month for the rest of the AL West division, the rest of the AL and the rest of baseball to make hay and cut into the Astros lead in the standings, the rest of baseball may be in trouble. Despite having four of their five starters on the DL during the month including the AL pitchers of the month for April and May, Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers Jr., the Astros put up a solid 16-11 record in June. That is the equivalent of a 96 win pace. For those keeping track, the Astros in their previous 55 seasons have only put up 96 or more wins three times. They have never put up 109 wins, which is their current pace.

So looking back at June – who gets the prestigious Chipalatta awards for this month?

Everyday Player of the Month – George Springer

Springer is putting up the season that everyone pictured when he went on his amazing run in May of his rookie year. This month took a lot to claim this award as so many players were stellar for the Astros. George’s numbers? 24 runs, 11 HRs, 21 RBIs, .333 BA, .412 OBP and monster 1.145 OPS. Here at Chipalatta we will trade those numbers for no stolen bases any time.

Runnerups – Carlos Correa (20 R, 7 HR, 19 RBI, .930 OPS), Josh Reddick (.389 BA/.410 OBP/1.035 OPS) and Jose Altuve (.354 BA/.431 OBP/1.007 OPS) – all might have won in another month.

Starting Pitcher of the Month – Mike Fiers

Is it more amazing that Fiers was a starting pitcher this month or that he was the starting pitcher of the month? He was not as killer dominating as Keuchel and McCullers had been the previous 2 months, but he gave the team a shot in the arm they needed badly.  With a 3-1 record, 2.32 ERA, 0.968 WHIP, .189 BA against, .517 OPS against, Fiers took back a starting rotation spot he almost gave away with a bad April and May.

Runnerup – Brad Peacock (3-1 record, 3.33 ERA and a 12.9 K/9 IP) – He did not pitch very deep into games, but he was asked to jump directly from the bullpen to the rotation and pitched about as good and long as could be expected.

Reliever of the Month – Chris Devenski

Beyond the fact that he had the coolest bobble head give-away of the season (Devo riding on a Game of Thrones dragon), he was back to being the best option out of the bullpen. He went 1-0, 1.04 ERA, .692 WHIP, .133 BA against, .464 OPS against, which are great numbers.

Runnerups – Will Harris (1.54 ERA, 11 Gm, .514 WHIP, 13.1 K/9 IP) and Luke Gregerson (1.54 ERA, 1.029 WHIP, .188 BA against, .559 OPS against) were just a step behind Devo for the month.

Best Rookie Cameo – Derek Fisher

Fisher’s numbers in a five game call-up belie the fact that he struggled a bit, but it was obvious that he belonged. He whacked a couple HRs and put up a .278 BA/.381 OBP/.992 OPS and left the fans thinking that he could be a nice boost to the lineup later in the season.

Stats That Don’t Match the Eyeball Test – Carlos Beltran

In a month where he struggled to a .200/.260/.660 line – Carlos scored 13 Runs, hit 4 HRs and had 15 RBIs. That is equivalent to 78 R, 24 HRs and 90 RBIs for a full seaason. Some of that is from being in the middle of a killer lineup, but it is far more productive than one would have thought from watching games for the month. Heck, Marwin Gonzalez only had 6 runs scored and 9 RBIs in June.

Runnerup – Never would have thought that Nori Aoki would be hitting .300 BA / .707 OPS for the month.

Biggest Disappointment for the Month (tie) – James Hoyt and Joe Musgrove

It may be unfair to throw Musgrove in here as he was working around an injury, but his 0-3 record, 10.29 ERA and 1.929 WHIP were eye opening in a bad way. Hoyt struggled with a 8.36 ERA, but his biggest problem was giving up 4 HRs including 2 grand salamis in 14 IP.

Biggest Disappointment for the Year – David Paulino

Paulino makes one wonder if PEDs can be transmitted from the user to the ones he is pitching to as he gave up 7 HRs in 25 innings pitched this year. He did give the Astros 2 wins in his 5 starts, but anytime a player is suspended for something he should not be doing, he lets down his teammates, his fans and himself.

Flash of the Future – Francis Martes

He wasn’t great, but he was decent and he is only 21 years old. Two of his three starts in the month were good though a little on the short side and with Paulino out of the picture he will certainly get some more starts in July until the cavalry arrives – Charlie Morton, Collin McHugh and Dallas Keuchel.

So….

  • Do you agree with awards?
  • If not, who would you give them to?
  • Are there other awards you would hand out?

We at Chipalatta wish all of our dear readers and their families a great 4th of July.

  1. In his last 25 games (since June 1) Yuli has a slash line of .343/.343/.627/.970.
Two questions. How does a guy hit like that and pitchers still can’t walk him?
How does a guy only walk 1 time in 105 PAs and nobody notices?
    Answer: Hair.

    • Sandy – Yuli was good this month just a step down from the other guys..He has gotten off to a big start in July.

OP – I had noticed his lack of walks going thru the numbers. It reminds me of how Altuve would go thru those stretches where he would never walk a few years ago.

  4. And the first ever ‘Dingers, Line-Drives, and Dives Award’ [sorry, Guy Fieri!] goes to George Springer and Josh Reddick, who were superb for our ‘Stros at the plate, in the clutch, and in the field in the month of June.

  5. ‘The Billy Bob’s Texas’ award for June goes to the Astros. In six head-to-head meetings with our in-state rivals this past month, we won 4 and lost 2, outscoring them 36-20. We now lead the 2017 version of the Silver Boot series 7-3.

The ‘Starbucks’ award for June goes to Carlos Correa, because it is pretty obvious he has the grounds to make the . . . you guessed it . . STAR BUCKS!

  6. Another Astros minor league player to keep an eye on: Carmen Benedetti.

After going 5-5 with two doubles and two RBIs for Quad Cities last night, the 22 y/o left-handed hitting 1B-OF out of the University of Michigan, who was drafted in the 12th round last year, is now slashing .305/.435/.896.

LH batters have hit this lefty better than righties have this year and also in his minor league career.

  12. And to honor Mr Bill, the true story of “You’ve Got to be Kidding” Award goes to guess who ?

Angel Hernandez claims his Cuban heritage is costing him money and prestige as a major league umpire.

Hernandez is suing Major League Baseball and commissioner Rob Manfred, alleging racial discrimination in making assignments, Cincinnati.com reported Monday. Hernandez, 55 and a big-league umpire since 1991, believes he should be a full-time crew chief and that he was good enough to have worked more than two World Series. He was assigned to the Series in 2002 and 2005.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Wow! Angel is fortunate that he is still a major league umpire. I don’t think he is a vindictive ump who is deliberately trying to hurt particular players, but he misses more calls especially on the bases than any ump I’ve ever seen. He better hope there are no baseball fans on the jury.

Astrocolt-45….I certainly hope Luhnow doesn’t do what he did last year, ESPECIALLY when this very well might “THE YEAR” for this club!! Freddie Freeman got activated today, and he’s playing 3rd tonight. Angels lost today, and Boston has arlington’s, number.

  16. I think Mr. Reddick, Sr. Gurriel, have been reading the blog and have set their sights on earning some ChipaLatt awards for the month of July. It looks like neither Mr. Springer nor Mr. Altuve are going to go down without a fight, however. Game on, gentlemen!

Also, at the end of July we probably need to vote on a ‘best-and-worst-return-from-the-DL’ award for McCullers, Musgrove, Morton, McHugh, and Keuchel.

  18. Responding to something Becky mentioned above: what is Luhnow going to do?
I think the Chippalatta crew will have a jam session on this subject soon, so I will just throw out one teeny thought about it.
Luhnow moved quickly last off season. Heyman made fun of Luhnow’s moves, saying Jeff overpaid by shopping early and now Heyman, rightfully, looks like an ass.
I think Luhnow might try the same thing in July. When you’re hot, you’re hot.

    • Did Julia race @BeatThaFreeze? I didn’t turn the game on until the bottom of the 8th last night, but will go try to catch the HOU affiliate rebroadcast. I’ve been searching and can’t find a video of this posted online yet.

      Like

      • OK, they didn’t actually race, but they showed a split screen of Julia running the track on the right and The Freeze running on the left and she would have lost the race. She wasn’t going very hard at the onset, however. This occurs in the bottom half of the 5th inning. It’s about 2hr15min into the broadcast.

  19. We seldom talk about defensive stats – for obvious reasons. But just out of curiosity, I checked to see where the Astros rank in the MLB on charged errors. We are tied with three other teams just above the middle of the pack, with 50 charged errors in 84 games. Who were the three other teams with 50 errors, you ask? The Dodgers, the Nationals, and the Rangers.

In case you are interested, the Royals, the Rockies and the Twins all have less than 40 charged errors on the season! The most errors of any team? You guessed it – the Oakland A’s.

    Like

    • Here is a very interesting related stat Mr. Bill….
The team that has allowed the least amount of unearned runs this season….The Astros with 15 runs. This is a testament to how well the pitchers pick up the fielders and how the team as a whole does not let mistakes snowball.
So they are just above the middle of the pack in making errors they are number one in keeping the other team from cashing in.

Other teams you mentioned and the number of unearned runs allowed

      Dodgers – 17
      Nats – 27
      Rangers – 38!!!
      Royals – 22
      Rockies – 16
      Twins – 35
Oakland??? A major league worse 53 unearned runs allowed – about 3.5 times the Astros

  20. I think the Stros should go after the Pads’ Trevor Cahill. He looked VERY impressive yesterday in his 1-0 win over The Tribe and Corey Kluber. He’d strictly be a rent-a-pitcher (he’s a FA in 2018), and would likely only cost a single prospect. His $1.75 mil salary is well below his worth. Cahill is legit!

    • This season he is a Luhnow-type guy with high Ks and super high ground ball rate.
And his big out pitch is his curve, which is Luhnow’s MO in looking to add pitchers.

    • Intriguing guy Bopert. I’m assuming he just came off the DL because he did not pitch between mid-May and last night. Not a big innings eater – kind of giving them Peacock-ish starts in that 5-6 inning range and obviously went shorter (4.1 IP) on his first start back.
I wonder how much it would take to pry him loose – do they think he is going to help them get back in the race (they are only 12.5 games out of the wild card- lol) or do they think he is someone they can pull a prospect or two out of the Astros.
Good guy to highlight, Bo – under the radar guy who has pitched well the last few years.

      • Dan,

I found it very interesting that the Braves manager walked Bregman with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs to bring up Devo. It told me that the Astros lineup is loaded up and down and that the Braves wanted nothing to do with Devo (he was hoping Hinch would PH for Devo). Devo struck out, but it just shows how much respect this lineup has earned.

We still haven’t signed our first pick in the draft…..you know why, his agent is Scott Boras. We have until Friday to get him signed. Oh yeah, Mr. Fister is getting hit hard by the arlington little league tonight. Why would you pick that guy up when you’re in the hunt….oh well!

For those that can’t see the game – they just flashed a stat – the Astros are scoring 6.85 runs a game on the road – surpassed only 3 times since 1913 by the 1930, ’36 and ’39 Yanks.

How good are the Astros? Nori Aoki is a defensive sub for Marisnick! Then he gets a hit, steals a base and scores a run.
Franklin Perez had a rough start for BC tonight. It’s a process.
Kyle Tucker had a double and a homer and 2 RBIs tonight for CC. I’m still not happy with the look of his long swing. I think he will need some adjustments to hit major league pitching as well as he is hitting minor league pitching.
Astros finish the night with five of their players hitting .300 or higher and Gurriel at .299.
The Astros have been great playing in America. Now they play the international tour for four games.
