Quick Look at the Astros Top 30 Prospects

Yes, this may be a sign of the Astros not being that interesting on the major league level so far this season, but here is this blogs’ early season grading of the top 30 Houston Astros prospects as they were ranked by Jim Callis of mlb.com in March with stats through May 10th.

1. Alex Bregman SS / 22 y.o. / AA – .314 BA/.422 OBP/ 1.093 OPS – 7 HR/17 RBI/2 SB – 10 BB / 7 K

Grade A+ He is doing everything you could wish with the bat – time to promote.

2.  A.J. Reed 1B / 23 y.o. / AAA – .229/.333/.790 – 6 HR/21 RBI – 17 BB/26 K

Grade B-  Reed is hitting with power, knocking in runs and walking – he needs to K less and raise that BA.

3.  Francis Martes RHP / 20 y.o. / AA – 7.89 ERA / 1.892 WHIP – 7.1 K/9 IP – 6.6 BB/9 IP

Grade D This would probably be an F, but heck he is only 20 years old pitching at AA.

4.  Kyle Tucker OF / 19 y.o. / A – .299/.379/.809 – 1 HR/14RBI/ 14 SB – 14 BB/ 23 K

Grade A Those are solid numbers, the OBP and the 14 SBs really stand out for the kid.

5.  Daz Cameron OF / 19 y.o. / A – .143/.221/.442 – 0 HR/6 RBI / 4 SB – 8 BB/ 33 K

Grade D To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, “I knew Mike Cameron and you are no Mike Cameron”. So far….

6.  Colin Moran 3B / 23 y.o. / AAA – .276/.325/.686 – 1 HR/17 RBI/2 SB – 8 BB / 29 K

Grade B- Good on the BA and RBIs, not so great on the power and K numbers

7.  David Paulino RHP / 22 y.o. / AA – 2.08 ERA / 1.038 WHIP – 11.1 K/9 IP – 2.1 BB / 9 IP

Grade A Love that he is striking out more than 5 batters for every walk.

8.  Joseph Musgrove RHP / 23 y.o. / AA – 0.34 ERA / .835 WHIP – 10.3 K/9 IP – 1.0 BB/ 9 IP

Grade A++++ These look like video game numbers – move this man up in a hurry!!

9.  Derek Fisher OF / 22 y.o. / AA – .227/.344/.780 – 5 HR/17 RBI/3 SB – 20 BB / 28 K

Grade C+ Decent power and OBP – needs to get that BA up.

10.  Michael Feliz RHP / 22 y.o. / MLB – 7.84 ERA and 1.527 WHIP, but…. In last 3 appearances he has 5 shutout innings and 8 K’s.

Grade C- (but on the rise) – The numbers aren’t great, but it is at the MLB level and he has looked more and more like a horse with each appearance.

UPDATE: Mr. Feliz earned the win on Wednesday with 3 innings of one hit, no walk, 5 K, shutout ball and lowered that ERA to 6.08.

11.  Albert Abreu RHP/ 20 y.o./ A – 3.70 ERA/1.11 WHIP – 14.1 K/9 IP – 4.4 BB/9 IP

Grade B Needs to knock those walks down, but 14.1 Ks per 9 IP – that is strong.

12.  J.D. Davis 3B/ 23 y.o./ AA – .207/.308/.656 – 2 HR/12 RBIs/ 0 SBs – 14 BB / 26 K

Grade D+ He has to either show better contact or more power as a 3B.

13.  Tyler White 1B/3B / 25 y.o. / MLB – .240/.304 / .764 – 5 HR/ 15 RBIs – 9 BB/ 26 K

Grade B It is too bad they have not given him more opportunities to work out of his slump. But not bad for his first big league shot.

14.  Tony Kemp OF/2B/ 24 y.o. / AAA – .304/.423/.835 – 1 HR/ 9 RBIs/ 4 SBs – 19 BB/20 K

Grade B+ Little power, but very good bat work with BBs and Ks almost even.

15.  Jonathan Arauz SS/2B/ 17 y.o. – His short season has not started yet

16.  Gilberto Celestino OF/ 17 y.o. – His short season has not started yet

17.  Miguelangel Sierra SS/ 18 y.o. – His short season has not started yet

18.  Franklin Perez RHP/ 18 y.o. – His short season has not started yet

#15 thru 18 get an incomplete

19.  Jandel Gustave RHP/ 23 y.o./ AAA – 3.00 ERA/ 1.00 WHIP – 9.0 K/ 9 IP – 1.2 BB / 9 IP

Grade A- A guy throwing this hard and walking this few could end up special.

20.  Riley Ferrell RHP/ 22 y.o. / A+ – 1.80 ERA / 1.10 WHIP – 12.6 K/ 9 IP – 1.8 BB/ 9 IP

Grade A+ He is doing this at Lancaster – look at those K vs. BB numbers. Wow!

21.  Jon Kemmer OF/ 25 y.o./ AAA – .192/.280/.623 – 1 HR/8 RBI/1 SB – 8 BB/27 K

Grade D- His age and his performance are doing him no favors here.

22.  James Hoyt RHP/ 29 y.o./ AAA – 2.60 ERA/.981 WHIP – 14 K/ 9 IP – 3.1 BB/ 9 IP

Grade A- Being 29 y.o. is the only drawback – love those K’s.

23.  Brendan McCurry RHP/ 24 y.o./ AA – 3.63 ERA / .981 WHIP – 13.5 K/ 9 IP – 2.6 BB/ 9 IP

Grade B+ ERA a little high for a reliever, but his K’s vs. BB’s are sweet.

24.  Chris Devenski RHP/ 25 y.o. / MLB – 1.72 ERA/ 1.085 WHIP – 7.8 K/ 9 IP – 2.0 BB/ 9 IP

Grade A+ He has been all you could ask of a young man in his mlb debut.

25.  Alfredo Gonzalez C/23 y.o./ AA – .103/.308/.311 – 0 HR/ 4 RBI – 9 BB/ 21 K

Grade F Let’s face it, he has to climb up to see bottom with his hitting.

26. Teoscar Hernandez OF/23 y.o./ AA – .267/.362/.778 – 3 HR/ 8 RBI / 9 SB – 15 BB / 28 K

Grade B- Has decent power and speed, but still strikes out like an……Astro.

27.  Matt Duffy 3B/1B/27 y.o. / AAA – .173/.296/.509 – 0 HR/ 3 RBI – 12 BB / 31 K

Grade D Very disappointing so far for the 2015 AAA MVP.

28.  Andrew Aplin OF/25 y.o./ AAA – .177/.286/.564 – 1 HR/ 4 RBI/ 5 SB – 12 BB / 22 K

Grade D Likely to drop off the list soon

29.  Akeem Bostick RHP/ 21 y.o. / A+ – 5.06 ERA/ 1.969 WHIP – 4.2 K/ 9 IP 6.8 BB/ 9 IP

Grade D+ It is only 10 innings, he is only 21 and it is Lancaster where pitchers struggle – so not F.

30.  Michael Freeman LHP/ 24 y.o. / AA – 4.15 ERA/1.615 WHIP – 4.7 K/ 9 IP – 4.7 BB/ 9 IP

Grade C- He probably deserves a better grade for being the only LHP on this list, but you can’t walk as many as you strike out and go too far.

So…..

  • What do you think of the grades?
  • Who should be dropped from the list?
  • Who should be added (like Thomas Shirley) to the list?

  1. On top of everything else – buzzards luck tonight. Everything Boston hits finds a hole. Correa up with 2 on and lines into a double play.

  2. Mr. Bill…….the Red Sox have Chili Davis for a hitting coach, what pray tell is Dave Hudgens still with this club??!! I want a guy like that coaching OUR guys.
I feel for McCullers……Hinch should just let Feldman finish this game, before McCullers right arm fall off. The second inning is just a taste of what’s to come for this club tonight. These guys are just way over matched with the Sox. Thanks for keeping us informed on Bregman and company!

  3. Keegan Yuhl had a good outing – especially against a fantastic line-up. He went 5 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 3 Ks. He threw 93 pitches, though – which is way too many for 5 innings. Hooks still lead 5-0. Brendan McCurry is on in relief of Yuhl.

  4. Note to Mr. Hinch:

The guy you slotted into the line-up as the designated hitter leads your team in strikeouts, and is hitting all of .196/,244/.512. That is not a designated hitter. That is a designated sitter.

  5. Hooks win! Hooks win! Game 1 of double header vs. Frisco ends CC 5, Frisco 2.

Evan Grills will start game 2.

  6. The highs are so high. Great comeback win.
Evan Grills threw a one-hit, 7 inning shutout in game two of the DH with Frisco tonight and CC swept them. 5-2 in the first game and 5-0 in the second.
    Fisher hit another homer tonight.

  7. I saw some real toughness from Lance McCullers tonight. He fought through a gruelling second inning, Could have folded up shop, but did not. He’s a tough kid. Springer had a big night. Coincidence? Get the old crap out of the way, and let the young guys play ball.

  8. It was a clean sweep for the Astros and their affiliates last night. QC was rained out, but Lancaster won, CC swept a DH and Fresno won in extra innings. Musgrove got a no decision, going 5 IPs, 2 runs, 1 ER, 1 BBs and 5 Ks in his AAA debut.

  9. Got to watch part of the game last night in PA and the team looked a lot better. Hope it’s a trend we see more of. McCullers looked good but I didn’t see the 5 run second but I like the way he attacks the the plate. Have to be aggressive.
It’s time to get NO-GO and Valbuena out of the line up. This is getting ridiculous.
As I watched I predicted the second K but I missed the fly out to left. He is a cancer on this team and needs to go. Hoping for good things today.

On another note I’m a little late to this party but hang in there Billy. My career was filled with ups and downs and there were times that I felt like screaming out why me? I had a great job one day and the next day it was gone. My whole life it has been this way. I continue to have my faith and prayers help. We’ll be saying one for you too. Isn’t it wonderful that although we don’t know people personally on this blog, we still interact as a pretty cohesive “family” unit.

  10. All points bulletin for Tyler White. Please issue a B.O.L.O. The Great White actually started to get his stroke back, and has been out of the line-up ever since. Is this any way to run a space cadet academy? You bet it is!

    • Bill, I went to Baseball Reference and compared Marwin and Tyler’s stats to see who is hot and who is not.
White’s last ten games are just plain embarrassing and Marwin has the second best stats on the team in his last ten games. Marwin is hitting .333 and White is hitting .132 in comparing their last ten games.
Marwin’s OPS in his last ten games is over 400 points higher than White’s last ten games. Marwin is red hot and White is ice cold.
Sorry, the numbers are right there and it’s not even close.
I’d play the guy who is hot, too.

      Like

      • I have more problem with them playing Gomez as a DH – Gomez is as cold as Luhnow’s statistician heart.

      • My point was not that Gonzales should have sat out. It was that Marisnick should have sat out. Tucker could have played left, Rasmus center.

  11. Bill, he’s probably in danger of getting sent down, before ever having a real chance at winning a job. That’s what we do with rookies with the fifth most RBI’s on the club and the fifth highest OPS. Sure, he’s struggled, but still has 5 more RBI’s than Gomez and Valbuena combined. 2 for 3 on May 7, 2 for 4 on May 8. Sits on May 9, hitless since. That’s how we groom the new guys. Marwin is hot, so I understand him being in. Find a way to play them both! But I guess it makes more sense to keep trotting Valbuena out there.

    Like

    • I hope he does get sent down. I hope PTuck gets sent down as well. They both need to play regularly and get their stroke back. They’lll both be back. I just hope HInch’s attitude changes when they come back, and that we have a new hitting coach and philosophy by then.

  12. Some people talk about Bregman like he will be traded because he is a SS. I don’t believe it. As long as he hits, he serves the Astros a lot better on their team because they need hitters!
The Astros traded Appel because they did not see him as a TOR starter anymore and that made him expendable.
Bregman is different. He’s a multi-position player whose absolute best tool appears to be his bat and he is controllable at below comparable player salary for six years. Who the hell would they trade him for that would be better than an inexpensive everyday player with a good bat? He added muscle to his body and has shown more power this season and that is an added bonus for Houston with the Crawford Boxes. He is hitting very well against RH pitching and that indicates he is an everyday bat and not a one sided player.
Tyler Heineman is not hitting. He is not striking out. His BABIP is a ridiculous .167, more than 140 points below his career BABIP. He will break out of his slump.
AJ Reed has a BABIP of .243, way below his career BABIP. He is in a slump that he will break out of.
The major league players the Astros have that are blocking the Astros top prospects will be gone by November, even if the Astros turn things around. It will happen sooner, if the Astros don’t turn it around.
Looking at George Springer’s minor league defensive stats and his major league defensive stats, nobody, nobody can convince me that Springer should not be the Astros starting center fielder. Big mistake by Luhnow! Build around the guy, instead of limiting him with a flimsy excuse about his arm being too good for it not to be in RF. That is crap. Springer is being wasted.

  13. I forgot to mention that Heineman has had only 14 stolen base attempts against him this season and he has thrown out seven of those, for a 50% rate.

  16. Becky – I do want to point out something for perspective. Boston is the best offensive team in the AL and it is not even close.
    5.92 Runs/game (next is Tex 4.61)
.296 BA (next is Bal .273)
.356 OBP (next is Bal .335)
.841 OPS (next is Bal .795)

Those are huge numbers and they are tough on everyone. So, having the lead is a big deal against this juggernaut.

  17. Am I the only one here who has never thought much of Tucker’s potential? His swing is really, really, ugly.

    Like

    • I guess I never thought of it as that ugly – though he has had a lot uglier results this season than last. I always thought he was limited because of his lack of speed / fielding ability. Bottomline – when he is not hitting he is not helping.

      Like

      • Swing reminds me of Mike Lamb’s.

I noticed one major, major weakness…he is very vulnerable to outside pitches, because 1) he tries to pull everything, and 2) he is standing too far back in the box away from the plate. Unless someone pitches him low and inside, he’s screwed. When Gattis comes back, I’d send Tucker down for a bit.

        I blame Hudgens, of course.

    • In the 9th I understood not walking him (but did not like Gregerson grooving one to him) it would have moved the tying run into scoring position and put the winning run on base.
But in the 11th he did not matter – walk him.

      • Doesn’t matter…..I know they have the White Sox this week, that’s why I said home or Arlington…..the bullpen will be hammered by the time we play them.

  19. We talked about it all. Bad pitching, why do you throw Ortiz a changeup there, he was way out in front and still had time to wait on it?
Bad hitting, no runs in the last nine innings. Colby Rasmus with the ugliest at bat ever!. Bad managerial decisions with letting Ortiz beat you with a base open. Bad baserunning with one of the ugliest steal attempts ever, by Correa.
Closer doesn’t close. Gomez, omg, how bad can a player be? Boston announcers just laughing at him, not because he’s struggling, but because he refuses to change anything to help himself.
Boston announcers in disbelief that anybody would pitch to Ortiz with 1B open and a RH batter up next with Feliz on the mound.
Total team effort. How about the wild pitch? Castro has to block that pitch.
    The lows are so low.

  20. I also forgot about how the Astros could possibly not be wearing sunglasses, with that sun, especially after seeing the Boston player lose a popup in the sun in the previous inning. I mean, fielders were wearing sunglasses sixty years ago. Where are the baseball guys on this team?

    • Totally agree – the players should have known and the coaches should have been policing it.
This was a team effort in a bad way.

  21. I think A.J. tends to over manage. In the inning when he PH White for Tucker with 1B open and another LH on deck didn’t seem wise to me. You had to know Ferrell was going to IBB White there. Then, after they do, he PRs Gomez for White assuring us we will have Gomez and Marisnick in the game the rest of the way. MarGo was on 3B at the time and was the go ahead run. What was the point in taking out White? Essentially, he completely wasted White by PH him and then PR for him. I have my concerns whether A.J. can lead us to where we want to go.

    Like

    • Yeah, I didn’t like that sequence either. I think it’s time to either let Tucker hit some lefties or send him to AAA. I assume he pinch ran for White to give himself the option of straight steal of second, but I’d rather they left White over there and given Castro a chance at hit and run if you wanted to play the short game. We just wanted an insurance run!

      Like

      • Yes. He and White. I hate how as soon as a rookie struggles they move them to irregular playing time. I think it creates a vicious cycle that is hard to bust out of and inhibits further development.

  22. I hate to see the Astros lose – ever. But I will say that I am greatly encouraged by what we have seen in Boston. Right now Boston is playing at World Series level, in all phases of the game. We are not at that level, but some of our guys have finally shown the heart to play at that level. This is by far the best baseball we have played – even though we’ve lost 2 and only won 1.

  24. Checking out the minor league scores this morning, David Paulino is the name that stands out. He only was allowed to throw five innings of shutout ball and 63 pitches. Fortunately, for CC, his tandem partner, Kyle Smith, only gave up three runs and earned a save as the Hooks beat Frisco again, 6-3.

    Like

    • I know they are really trying to limit innings (Verducci effect concern), but given the investment in statistical analysis in the organization you would hope they would be smart enough to know that 5 IP with 63 pitches thrown is a light warm-up and more equivalent to most milb pitchers working 3-4 innings.

and for the rest of the year it was .206/.252/.335/.586.
This season, his slash line is .100/.129/.133/.262. and not only is he on the team, but he got sent down to Fresno, didn’t hit there and was welcomed back to Houston within a week or two. The ball that Hanley couldn’t handle yesterday was his first extra base hit and his only RBI was the groundout he hit in the 11-1 loss to Boston.

      • The April month was just an illusion. It’s almost like his body was taken over for a month by Roberto Clemente and then Roberto decided to leave and Austin Wates took his place. Roberto came back for two weeks this year in Tyler White’s body and then was replaced by JR Towles.
When I used to play softball, “getting burned” was the embarrassing name we gave to playing in on someone and then have them hit the ball over our heads in the outfield. Does anyone remember our center fielder getting burned as many times as we have seen them get burned in the last three weeks? It seems like it is happening every game, and sometimes twice a game.

  29. Recall friends, that Luhnow and the Astro’s management fired or did not renew a vast majority of the organization’s minor leagues’ management and coaching staffs at the end of last season. I feel strongly that this is a huge reason that the minors have taken a step backwards.

Concerning the big club, we all knew that there was not a good hitting instructor, nor assistant hitting instructor, on the staff. Thus the same ol’ same ol’ this year of all the strike outs and lack of situational hitting. The running game resembles the old “Chinese” fire drill game that we played as youngsters where, at a traffic light, we would all jump out of the car and race around the car until the traffic light turned green and who knew where who would end up sitting… just like last year.

My biggest worry though, is what in the real frank heck has happened to the pitching staff? Dallas over 5 ERA as is Colin. The relievers cannot hold games. Dallas is the one I am most concerned about. How does he go from 2+ seasons of nails to what he is now? Even this spring training he was lights out. I cannot believe that Strom has suddenly lost his magical touch. I know many on here predicted that the pitching staff would have regression but this much??? WOW!

I feel that White needs to go to Fresno to regain his mojo.

The only star on the team right now is Mr. Consistency, Jose Altuve.

Did I read on an earlier post here that Luhnow was interviewed and stated that he is dictating to Hinch who is playing and where in the lineup?

    • Sarge, White was 2 for 3 on Tuesday and 2 for 4 on Wednesday. The was then rewarded with a day off on Thursday. He just needs to play everyday. He won the first base and it was taken from him after less than 100 at bats. We’ve got other guys with far bigger problems than White.
