Critical two weeks are ahead for Astros

The Astros have shown signs of life the last week winning five of their last seven games after their 7-1 thrashing of the Cleveland Indians and former Cy Young winner Corey Kluber Monday night. Their record stands at 13-20 and they are 6.5 GB in their division behind the Seattle Mariners and 5 GB in the Wild Card race. The recent spurt has been mostly due to an improvement in the starting pitching with an ERA of 3.30 over the last 7 games and an even better 2.16 ERA over the last 5 games.

Given that, the Astros are facing a difficult turn over the next two weeks. How they perform over this coming time period may well determine if their performance on this last home stand was a drowning man resurfacing for good or coming up for the last time.

Including Monday night’s game, the Astros will be playing series against four teams that are all currently over the .500 mark. They play the next two at Minute Maid against the Indians and two pitchers that as Mr. Bill pointed out yesterday have been poison to the Astros. Then they go out on the road to play four games against the 19-13 Red Sox, who have won 11 of their last 15 games. After that they play three at the 23-10 White Sox, who are the best team in the American League to date. Then they finish the two-week run with three games at home against the Rangers. Yes, those Rangers who look at the Astros like a homeless dog looks at a tossed steak.

At the end of the two weeks the Astros could be hopelessly behind in the race. It is probably too much to expect them to gain ground during this time, but if they can play .500 during these two weeks they may have built a decent foundation for better times to come.

So…..

  • Do you see this as a critical two weeks in the fate of the Astros?
  • How do you think they will fare over this time period?
  • What kind of record would signal the end for them come May 23?

  1. You send a pitcher to the mound that you have scored *1* measly run for in *3* starts??? That kinda tells the story of Devenski’s…season so far. The kid has given up 3 runs so far, and he still stays winless. This team needs a charge in the rotation, and McCullers can’t get in there fast enough….and the rest of this team has no excuse for a start to this season. P E R I O D.

  2. Some pitchers own certain teams and Bauer owns us. He just comes out and throws his stuff over the plate because the Astros can’t hit it.
My wife and I watched three batters tonight because we had lots of company. After they left we watched Bauer walk Springer leading off and then strike out Correa and Rasmus looking like they went up there without bats. We looked at each other in amazement and turned it off.
I think I’ll call it a night and just think about the next two weeks after the shock of this performance wears off tomorrow.
Bregman with his seventh homer tonight. Proved to be the winning run.

  3. McCullers comes back tomorrow……with every guy in the rotation pitching well, that’s gonna be a big decision for Hinch. A very nice problem to have by the way.

  4. After tonight, I’m thinking Stassi will replace Kratz when Castro’s back. I’m hoping so anyway. With my luck, Castro will replace Stassi and Kratzi will go down when Gattis is back. Gattis needs to be a platoon DH/and very occasional catcher, at the most. He’s not even hitting AA pitching.

Very critical 2 weeks. We need to go balls-to the-wall , no excuses, full-stop effort. If we’re still spinning our wheels, then we need to look at making serious changes.

I think by the end of the month, if they are still doing the same, Gomez and Valbuena will be released (with Moran coming up, and Jake replacing Gomer)/

  5. Billy, I’d be delighted to see Gomez gone at some point soon, but Jake does not plug his hole in the line up. Jake is just not a starter. He can’t hit.

As for Moran, yeah, I’m ready to give him a shot over Valbuena too. It can’t get much worse over there at third. But I’d also start playing Bregman at third on a regular basis too, Hopefully in Fresno, should Moran get the nod.

I don’t really have much in the way of expectations for the next couple of weeks, so sure Dan, if we play .500 ball, and stabilize, that would be good. and if the club gets to .500 overall by the All Star break, then they;be still got a shot.

    • VB is finally starting to hit and Moran and his high K% does not look ready to me. I think VB sticks around, but I could see Gomez getting released. Many over at TCB are advocating giving Kemp a shot in CF and let him bat 9th. It might be worth a shot.

Today is a big game, in my opinion. You lose this game and finish a 10-game homestand at 5-5 with this ominous road trip ahead and it might just be the final nail in the coffin for this season. Win today and finish the homestand with no series losses and it could propel them to play decent on the road. This season looks so much like 2000 where the talent is there, but for whatever reason the team just can’t seem to put it together.

      • My problem with Kemp is he provides very little help if he doesn’t maintain a high BABIP. He doesn’t swing a particularly hard bat – his strengths are he draws walks (at least in the minors) and he doesn’t strike out terribly much (up some this year so far but its short sample). He has a .370 BABIP right now at AAA – but his BABIP has been all over the place over his career, which is part of the apprehension I am sure the Astros brass has, if he BABIP isn’t over .320 he starts to hurt you more than help you.

The guy could come in and hit .300 with a .370 OBP, and give himself plenty of opportunities to wreck havoc on the bases. He could hit .250 with a .310 OBP, and with no power and no opportunity to use that speed you could deal with a lot of ofers that hurt you more than he helps, particularly because he isn’t as good defensively as any of the other alternatives – he would literally be the 5th best defensive CFer on the roster behind Gomez, Marisnick, Rasmus and Springer.

Granted even .250 is better than we get now – but there is history on the side of Gomez to suggest he can be better than Kemp can be. I’m willing to ride Gomez out until the end of June before I say he is done – but I admit I would start cutting into his playing time some by shifting Rasmus over 2-3 times a week and playing Tucker some in LF against the better right handers.

      • Steven,

I don’t disagree with you on Kemp. I’m just stating what I read and everyone seems to want Gomez gone. I would find favorable pitching matchups for Gomez (pitchers that top out at 92) and do as you suggest, which is move Rasmus to CF and PTuck in LF in other situations.

  6. It was a weird game last night. At times the guys were just staring at strikes well inside the zone. At times the ump was giving Bauer what seemed like Glavine-esque corners, though on at least one pitch to Correa he missed calling a strike on a ball that was smack dab down the middle. They swung right through some very hittable pitches. His off-speed pitch (around 84 mph) seemed to fool them a lot. They would swing too soon or just hit easy grounders.
They need to move Josh Fields out of the bullpen – he just fools no one these days with his straight stuff. He can’t get the breaking pitch over and they just wait on a heater in a hittable spot.

I am afraid that McCullers return may not help much at all. It depends on whose spot he takes in the rotation. If they sub him for Devenski – I don’t think that improves the team at all. Devenski has been pitching very well. I don’t know what they are thinking here. I guess we will see.

    • I thought it was a very late, breaking slider. They couldn’t recognize pitches last night…which is a common problem for the team.

      I have a problem with everyone’s cut/promotion suggestions:
      – VB is lost, but Moran isn’t asserting himself right now. Duffy should be first in line…but forgot how to hit.
      – JFSF still can’t hit. Gomez just can’t hit anything above 92mph.
      – Stassi hasn’t hit much more than Kratz.
      – Kemp looked bad in spring training. Are you really going to eat Gomez’ salary and 40 man spot for a guy that might be JFSF with no arm and no pop?

      • I guess we’re all just desperate to find a solution. But you’re probably right, making a move just to do something isn’t going to fix anything.
Probably the best thing to do at this point is to stay the course.
But after the season ends the FO needs to re evaluate this organization from to bottom.

  7. All great posts. They more I dissect this team the more I see we just are missing a lot of pieces. I had a dream last night that all winter long we all posted what an improved offensive team we would have this year. NOT

I think the pitching by the time the year averages out will not be that bad. Offensively we are offensive. Forget an occasional game, night in and night out I still see Altuve show up and occasional Correa and Rasmus. We have one of the best RF in Baseball , but the more I see Springer the more I see a career .250/16/60 guy. Now that could change if we trade him, he might end up a perineal All Star.

we need a lot of help on this 25!

    • It would change. The moment he stepped off the plane in another city they would introduce him to a hitting coach. The coach would explain how his setup and stride at the plate drops his eye level a good 4 to 6 inches and makes it difficult to time the placement on that front foot landing. He would stop swinging through pitches as often and lead the league in doubles and walks.

  8. I guess I know why they are looking at Gattis at catcher (and before you tell me he could only be an occasional catcher – remember he caught 130+ games in the two seasons with the Braves before coming here) – look at our catcher’s BAs from the majors down to AA.

    Majors
    Castro – .195
    Kratz – .043

    AAA
    Heinemann – .167
    Stassi – .143
    Pena – .191

    AA
    A. Gonzalez – .103
    Woodward – .219

Man – that is just so bad, that even the inefficient offensive player that Gattis is would be a boost at the catcher’s position.

I think we all know people in our daily lives or at work, who are brilliant, who are some of the smartest people we have ever met, but have trouble finding their desks after going to the bathroom. Common sense is not that common especially among those who are blessed with brilliance (or self-proclaimed brilliance).

From over fifty years of watching baseball, I get the feeling that something is eating away at this team from the inside. They remind me so much of the Mariners and Nationals of last year. Something is rotten and is eating away at the players.

As for the next two weeks, I think the Astros will continue to play below .500 ball.
As for the six man rotation, I think it is a good idea for the club because the season is probably not going to end up well and it gives the team the chance to not run up innings on our pitchers of the future, it gives us a chance to see Devenski, and it gives other teams a chance to look at Fister, Fiers and Feldman.

    • Hey OP, I’ll say what I’m thinking and see if you agree. Whether its a baseball team or a small business when highly paid employees who are expected to produce fail over and over again it really damages morale/chemistry. Consider that Gomez, Valbuena, Giles (not expensive in terms of salary but in what he cost us), Castro, Gattis, Neshek are doing nothing of any value and grossly underachieving. It has to tick off guys like Keuchel and Altuve especially who are relative bargains. Rasmus and Gregerson are the only veterans making big $$$ who are performing near expectations. I know some on this blog have said they don’t hear anything about Gomez being a bad teammate but a selfish guy like him who talks the talk but can’t walk the walk is a drag on any kind of organization. He was a big del in the shadow of Ryan Braun in Milwaukee but when he came here with the expectations of being the big dog he has flopped miserably. Having him gone would be a nice first step.

      • I’ll disagree, but not out of disrespect. I think it has more to do with going out and giving big money to players outside the organization, trading your top prospects for players from outside the organization. and proving yourself to be a big fat liar to the younger players in your organization that you told the world were the FUTURE!
You said that your young players were your future and you stabbed them in the back in every way possible. Super 2, change their position when they get to the majors, give their jobs to guys who weren’t here and weren’t supposed to be here and who aren’t earning their pay, paying major league money to a minor league player who proved he couldn’t be trusted, and then keeping him while blocking others, even though he didn’t perform. Trading five of them to a rebuilding team for a reliever. Not pitching top notch pitchers in the minors the way they should have been pitched so that you could somehow hold them back now, so that they would be more valuable to you later, but not giving them their big chance they have worked for all their lives. Putting their futures in the hands of dummies like Quentin McCracker, Hudgeons, Ensberg and all the stooges you put in the minor leagues to “coach” because they were part of your “new wave”.

  11. For the Astros to progress offensive production has to improve A LOT! The starting pitchers have hit their stride and the emergence of Devenski coupled with the return of McCullers strengthens the already strongest part of the club. Did anyone notice that Feldman pitched in the ninth inning Monday? He’s certainly not auditioning for closer but could he be a replacement for Fields/Neshek? Or is he being displayed as trade bait? Is Feliz considered the long man? He pitched in the ninth yesterday. If somehow the weak links in the bullpen – Fields, Neshek, Giles and Sipp could be replaced the staff as a whole could look pretty good. Giles and Sipp pretty much have to be retained so replace Fields and Neshek with Feldman and/or trade one of the F troop for catching or outfield help.

On my last post I pointed out that Gomez has driven in 5 runs while leaving 47 on base. Springer has left 55 but has at least driven in 16. Tucker and Valbuena are equally inept with both leaving 31 on base while driving in 4 and 5.

Is there any hope for this offense? I’m afraid not much. But why not try Springer at leadoff Correa second and Altuve third. I wish I had the stats readily at hand but my old brain seems to remember that Springer has hit best and more in control when leading off. Correa should be a run producer and I expect him to get better but why not take the pressure of hitting third off of him and onto Altuve who is emerging as a real force. Sure its cool when Jose leads off with a bomb but that first inning bomb would look even better with Springer or Correa on base. Gomez needs to go. Give the ABs to Tucker for the next 25 games and let him put up or shut up. Get White back into high contact mode and let the power just come naturally. Give 3B to Marwin until and if Moran or Bregman show up. At this point what do we have to lose?

    Like

    • What we have to lose is prospects.
If we’re out of it, I want Valbuena to start hitting home runs so somebody will give us a good prospect for him before the deadline.
If we’re out of it, I want Gomez to shine when it doesn’t matter for us, but matters to a team who needs a center fielder and will part with a decent prospect.
      Same for Castro.
      Same for Feldman.
      Same for Fields.
      Same for Neshek.
      Same for Fister.
      Same for Marwin
Give me eight decent prospects or more to help replenish a minor leagues that has been traded away.
Guys like Tucker, Reed, Moran, White and Duffy will still be here in August. Hopefully the guys who are mentioned above will have gotten us some young prospects in return and we can then turn to our guys who are ready.
Get something, anything back for the players we have that somebody else needs to rent for their playoff run. Don’t just give players away. Give me eight Frances Martes for them, and then I’ll fire Luhnow and hire somebody who will know what to do with eight young pitchers.
In the meantime, I’ve got Keuchel, McHugh, Fiers, Feliz, Devenski, McCullers, Musgrove, Shirley, Paulino and Martes to choose from for my 2017 rotation.

      • Sounds good OP, but what’s the point of stock piling more prospects if you’re just going to trade them away or let them rot in the minor leagues?

  12. Well – this is intriguing and maddening at the same time. Everybody knows something is wrong but none of us know what is wrong:
    – Are they upset because they think the organization is cheap? (if so Altuve, who is the most underpaid – did not get the memo).
    – Do they have the big head from last season? If so you would think the first month would have been a huge humble sandwich.
    – Did the pressure of expectations wear them down? Right now expectations have shifted to shaky hopes.
    – Are they suffering from paralysis by analysis- too much data, shifts, etc
    – Is this just normal swing back to the norm for a team that probably won more than they should have?
    – Did they get polluted by a guy like Gomez?
    – Did they all spend their playoff checks on recreational drugs?
    – Do they not respect their coaches front office and owner?
    – Did I miss something?

    • They have been blown out twice (16-6 by NYY and 11-1 by SEA). They have lost:
      – 5 one run games
      – 6 two run games
      – 4 three run games
      – 4 four run games

      We have won:
      – 3 one run games
      – 3 two run games

That’s what is wrong with them, Dan. If we are supposed to be a playoff caliber team you would expect 6-11 in one/two run games to be more like 11-6. A five game swing would have us at 18-16 with LMJ storming back and everyone would feel good.

    • I don’t think anything is wrong except the terrible start from the rotation. We are 13-21. We could be 18- 16 instead with a few more quality starts and not some of these stinkers that these starters have given us.

Can we improve offensively? Sure thing. Add a run to our average runs scored a game and we are probably still just say 15-19. Take a run off our ERA and we are a winning ball club. It’s all in the rotation – and some in the BP – Giles has had some stinkers that cost us any chance of winning games. Fister has been better lately but that bad start for 7 mil hurts. Fiers has been better lately, but he started awful. McHugh started awful. Keuchel started worse than ace quality and went through an awful stretch. McCullers has yet to throw a pitch. The rotation has been a perfect storm of badness. Feldman lost his job. What could go bad has gone bad.

The good news is we all know they can individually all be better. Likely 1 or 2 of them don’t get a lot better and lose their jobs. That happens in baseball. Just when you think you have it figured out they change the questions. I expect that Keuchel and McHugh will progress closer to the guys we know. I suspect McCullers will be pretty good but maybe limited some innings wise on his return. I don’t know that Fister is ever going to be better than a 1 out of 3 starts being legitimate winnable games, but we’ll see.

      It’s all in the pitching.

    • I know exactly what’s wrong: the leadership, the paltry payroll, and a greatly diminished fan base. It all leads to ongoing mediocrity over time.

This squad needs a legit 3B and probably one more offensive piece…NOW. This team cannot afford ANY injuries to the pitching staff. If a key hurler goes down, then Crane will need to open his wallet. To get offensive production from a corner IF position, Crane will need to open his wallet. To plug holes, it takes MOOLAH.

What happens if Castro goes down to injury? And he is a below-average catcher. What a mess that would be.

And fans need to come to the ballpark and open their wallets too. But they are fickle, and have recently been burned by Crane’s overt greed. And I’ve heard that parking is 30-40 bucks. Excuse me?

Once the superstars starting earning what they are worth, they will not be in Houston. There are only so many sweetheart-Jose-Altuve-pay-the-kid-millions-less-than-he’s-worth type deals to be had.

Within a couple years, the mediocrity will be slapping us full force. And the 13-21 start smacks of it (and stings) already!!

      • I would like to see Crane open his wallet at the deadline and grab someones expensive pitcher that is out of the race. He did that last year with Kazmir, unfortunately Kazmir wasn’t as effective as we hoped. Doing that will inspire some confidence I think from the fanbase. It’s probably too early to pry anyone of significance away right now.

  13. I agree. Something is unhealthy about this club. As we enter the middle of May, there are simply too many guys underperforming. It’s much easier to point out Altuve as the only guy who is over performing. And Correa has provided solid stats at the plate. And Rasmus. And Harris on the mound. Am I missing anyone? Little stats make me wonder. Why is a guy like Springer just 2 for 7 in steal attempts? He was 16 out of 20 last year. He has not lost a step. Where is his head at? And how could Gomez have gotten away with acting so immaturely throughout his career? He couldn’t. I’m guessing Giles hates his life with this club. And why has our Cy Young been so erratic? Is he arm weary from those 232 regular season innings last year? Or is he disgusted too, even after signing the extension?

I’m good with the 6 man rotation. Makes good sense, especially if both McCullers and Devenski are two of the six.

    • I don’t know what happened on all of Springer’s steals. I know last night the catcher made a great throw and barely got him. Are these all straight steals? Probably because they rarely hit and run. Does he always have a green light? Was he told to steal? Was he picked off on any of these and thrown out at 2nd?

      Like

      • Dan, I know there was at least one pick off in there, and you are correct, solid throw last night. But he did not choose a good pitch to go on. All I know is that he’s been thrown out 5 of 7 times. That 5 leads the league.

      • Yeah not defending him in this season of base running stupidity – but don’t know why he has suddenly gotten worse. Maybe he bulked up so he can swing 3000 mph instead of 2500 mph and that took away his speed?

  19. But we already know that Marwin can’t hit righthanded pitching. The stats are there for all to see. In the meantime, our starting first baseman has lost his everyday job while battling through his first major league slump after less than 100 at bats, still having the 5th highest OPS on the team and the 5th most RBI’s. That’s showing real confidence in the 33rd round draft pick who has defied the odds at every level. That’s a microcosm of what’s wrong with this club today.

    • Oh Becky – I should have said they were headed for extra innings when I wrote that – Gregerson let them tie it 3-3 in the top of the 9th.

  23. They were such in a hurry to take Stassi out that we got stuck with Kratz’s strikeout machine, and wasted White in the process.

  24. I’m still gonna pinch their heads off by leaving *17* on base!! WTH.
Feliz just grew up before your very eyes today folks!! They are gonna make him a starter up here……or the best closer in the game!!

    • I know it’s frustrating to fans, but it’s definitely the right move for the time being. If he can’t pitch tomorrow it doesn’t make sense to keep him here. Ideally, I wish they would also send down Fields and bring up Hoyt, but I doubt they will do that.

      • I know it’s the right move but imagine doing an outstanding job and then being demoted. That’s the kind of things that bring down moral. Send down Gomez or Fields or someone who isn’t doing an outstanding job.

      • I agree, Tim. It might just be more of a transactional thing, in that he’s only ‘in the minors’ while he rests and when he’s ready, he’s brought back up, probably in FIelds’s place

  25. My money is on Fields getting sent down……but I’m probably wrong. I’m giving a HUGE hight five for our pitchers this last week, and ESPECIALLY today! Gregersen is human, so I don’t pile on him, but the pitchers today were AWESOME!!

  26. The organization has sent Daz Cameron back to extended spring training to get his hitting back on track. Wasn’t he the BIG money signing last summer? Yeah…..he wanted $6 mill but settled for $4. Hmmmm…..what happened think?
Also…..Bryce Harper yelled at the home plate umpire, after the Nat’S walked off………
Eff you. He got himself a one game suspension for that little outburst. I’m sure he got a fine for it also. What a brat….hot headed…potty mouth…little JERK that kid is.
You don’t wanna know what I would do to him if I was his mother. He probably woldnt be able to talk after I yanked his smart alleck tongue outta his mouth!
    Oh yeah….Max Sherzer….is a *S T U D*.
