Finish the Phrase: Natives are restless edition

It is not that any of us were that happy to begin with – but the Houston Astros’ fans are really in a growling mood as more than half of the improvement add-ons are on the DL (Matt Albers, Scott Feldman, Jesse Crain), the team is still playing brain dead at times and more and more of Jeff Luhnow’s decisions are being questioned.

So, here is a quick way to get your inner pain out in the open called “Finish this Sentence”. Give it your best shot – which is more than most of the Astros seem to be doing lately.

  • “Jeff Luhnow’s number one priority should be …….”
  • “If I could go back in time and knock the phone out of Jeff Luhnow’s hand once – it would be to stop him from …..”
  • “If I was assigning blame for Astros’ problems right now I would assign the guilt as follows….”
  • “Reid Ryan has shown me ……”
  • “If Bo Porter was managing the 2014 Oakland A’s (currently 15-8) their record would be….”
  • “My biggest concern about the Astros’ minor leaguers is ……”
  • “I feel sorry for …..”
  • “In the upcoming June draft I am concerned that the Astros will…”
  • “By next season I expect the Astros to….”

I would say have fun with this, but…….

    • Dan, what McHugh shows the Astros is that there is a chance that even an obscure player can get called up and show more than the GM or any of us experts thought he could. It makes me think hard about what I told that blogger last night about Domingo Santana not being ready. Shoot, McHugh never showed anything like this in ST or in the minors until his very last start in OKC.

  1. Jeff Luhnow’s number 1 priority should be the W-L record of the 2015 Houston Astros. This year is what it is.
I would have stopped Jeff from trading Veras, even though Veras was put on the 15 day DL by the Cubs today.
If I were assigning blame for the current Astros right now I would assign it to Drayton for forming a phantom TV network.
Reid Ryan has shown me less signs in LF and that is about it.
If Bo Porter was managing the A’s their record would be….worse than it is now.
My absolute worse concern about the Astros minor leaguers is that they may wish they were not Astros minor leaguers.
In the upcoming draft I am concerned the Astros might draft a HS pitcher who would rather go to college than play for the Astros.
By next season I expect the Astros to not have enough money to sign anybody who is a really good baseball player.

    • The Astros are going to be able to sell draftees on being part of a winning system. By that, I mean that there should be enough talent to keep putting multiple squads into post-season play. They can frame that as a precursor to major success at the big league level and ask prospects, “Don’t you want to be a part of that?” Also, they will have more money to spend on the top pick(s).

      • Devin in general that should be enough. But as old pro says if you are trying to talk a HS senior out of going to Stanford you need to make sure he has not heard “stories”.

      • Why do you say this, Dan? Because the A’s are a so much better hitting team than the M’s?

By the way, did you like the way Corporan actually tried to gun down Moss when he was stealing second when we weren’t holding him on in the ninth? (Almost did.) I like his attitude and heart. Castro bobble head thing is fun.

      • Sure John – the A’s have the best OPS (on base % + slugging) in the AL while the M’s have the worst .643. Yes even worst than the Astros.

  2. I can put my Rosary beads back up now! DAAAAAANG……….I think we just found a shiny new pitcher to add to the rotation!
I feel sorry for Oberhholtzer, this kid has been lights out, with absolutely NO help from his team. Reid Ryan has shown me nothing so far, except to talk his dad into selling Round Rock to Jim Crane next year. The only thing I’m concerned with the minor leaguers, is that there is little movement when they are clearly ready to make the move up. That was an *awesome* game today!

  3. You guys gotta go to csnhouston.com to see what the guys did to McHugh after the game!! Poor Julia Morales……….

    • Wow – two Gatorade baths and Julia got some residual damage on the first one. The night before Corporan stole Julia Morales’ Jason Castro bobble head which he put in a prominent place for the late inning rally and dug it back out for this game. That bobble head will be used as long as the magic lasts.

… evaluating players who are sucking vs. players who are awesome in OKC.

“If I could go back in time and knock the phone out of Jeff Luhnow’s hand once – it would be to stop him from …..”
… Jesse Crain. I just think at this point that money could have been better spent.

“If I was assigning blame for Astros’ problems right now I would assign the guilt as follows….”
    … 1. Drayton 2. Luhnow and Crain 3. Porter.

“Reid Ryan has shown me ……”
    … nothing thus far.

“If Bo Porter was managing the 2014 Oakland A’s (currently 15-8) their record would be….”
… not that good. I just think he’s not the right guy.

“My biggest concern about the Astros’ minor leaguers is ……”
… too many will flame out.

    “I feel sorry for …..”
… people with cancer. In the end, this is just baseball.

“In the upcoming June draft I am concerned that the Astros will…”
… blow it. Carlos Rodon looks very very good. But “very very good” for 1-1 is scary. That said, I’m not sure I like anyone else at that spot. Eek! Yep, hope they don’t blow it.

“By next season I expect the Astros to….”
… to be committed to playing the best players in the organization. I think they’re just 75% committed right now. And that’s a shame.

  5. Kinda weird! the #2 prospect in our system is shipped back Kissimmee because he hasn’t been able to adapt to the Astros’ pitching system. At the same time the #1 prospect in the Astros system has just disappeared from the lineup for the last 3 games with not a word as to why.

    • The Appel situation is more bothersome – I assme if Correa had something serious we would have heard. Maybe he had a death in the family or the Astros flu.

  6. Dan’s personal answers
    – Jeff Luhnow’s number one priority should be to identify the right players to promote and then do so…
    – Knocking the phone out of his hand….when he called Bo Porter to offer him the job???
    – If I was assigning blame right now…. McLane – 20% / Crane 40% / Luhnow 25% / God 15%
    – Reid Ryan has shown me – next to nothing at this point.
    – If Bo Porter was managing the A’s – I think they would be 13-13
    – My biggest concern about the minor leaguers is…that they may get discouraged if they don’t get promoted for outperforming the folks above them.
    – I feel sorry for ….folks that would rather have no team than the one we have.
    – I go with Brian T – I am worried that the Astros will overthink the draft and pick the wrong person for the wrong reason.
    – By next season I expect the Astros to actually threaten a .500 record.
